Last week, we presented part of Work Package 2 from the RE-WIRING project at Utrecht University’s symposium. The event marked 50 years since the introduction of emancipation legislation in the Netherlands, a meaningful moment to reflect on progress and the work still ahead.
Alexandra Timmer and Monique Stijns opened the discussion by examining how “fit for purpose” and future-proof current Dutch emancipation laws are, highlighting both the implications of the current equal treatment legislation and the risks posed by algorithmic bias.
Next, Fleur van Leeuwen, Mirella Visser, Mylène Husson, and Linda Senden highlighted the crucial role of gender mainstreaming, underscoring the importance of embedding a gender perspective into legal frameworks and policymaking processes. Through concrete examples such as pension legislation and abortion law, they showed how overlooking gender dynamics can lead to unintended and unequal outcomes.
We look forward to continuing these vital conversations and translating our research insights into concrete policy recommendations for the incoming Dutch cabinet.
