🔔 Join us for a Symposium on 50 Years of Emancipation Policy in the Netherlands
📅 June 20, 2025 | 📍 Utrecht University
In 1975, the UN declared it the International Women’s Year, and the Dutch National Advisory Committee on Emancipation began advising the government on gender equality policy. Now, in 2025, we reflect on 50 years of emancipation efforts—their progress, challenges, and what still lies ahead.
RE-WIRING is proud to co-organize this symposium with the interdisciplinary research platform Gender, Diversity & Global Justice (part of Institutions for Open Societies, Utrecht University). Together, we will explore the evolution and current relevance of emancipation, a concept that remains just as vital today.
⚖️ From the right to abortion, the gender pay and pension gap, to women’s representation in leadership and protection against gender-based violence—many issues remain contested or unresolved.
🗣️ This symposium invites scholars, policymakers, activists, and the public to engage in conversations that span disciplines and generations:
🔹 Session 1: Emancipation in Space
Urban planning, architecture, and social geography—how space reflects and shapes gender roles.
(in collaboration with Hercity, Herstory)
🔹 Panel 1: Between Imagery and Policy
How has gender representation shaped Dutch emancipation policy over the decades?
🔹 Session 2: Emancipation in Law
How can legal systems become more gender-sensitive and transformative?
(organized with RE-WIRING – Realising Girls’ and Women’s Inclusion, Representation and Empowerment)
🔹 Panel 2: Past, Present, and Future
What has emancipation policy achieved—and what must still be done?
💬 Let’s reflect on 50 years of progress, envision a just future, and ensure all voices are heard.
🖼️ Plus: Visit the Good Mom/Bad Mom exhibition at Centraal Museum.
🎟️ Participation includes lunch, coffee, and a closing reception. Everyone is welcome—join the conversation!
