The acclaimed exhibition “Good Mom/Bad Mom”, currently on view at the Centraal Museum Utrecht until September 14, 2025, has been nominated for the prestigious Museumtijdschrift Tentoonstellingsprijs. This annual award, presented by Museumtijdschrift, celebrates the most outstanding exhibitions in the Netherlands.

Curated by Laurie Cluitmans and Heske ten Cate, “Good Mom/Bad Mom” is one of five exhibitions featured in the EU-funded RE-WIRING project, which explores gender inequalities through art and material culture. The exhibition delves into the politics of motherhood, care, and emancipation, challenging cultural myths, social expectations, and stigmas around parenthood.

From the idea of the “supermom” to the “never-mother,” the exhibition highlights a wide spectrum of maternal identities, represented through works by more than 60 artists, including Barbara Kruger, Artemisia Gentileschi, Käthe Kollwitz, Yoko Ono, Wangechi Mutu, and Marlene Dumas. Its curated “time capsules” provide historical and social context on themes such as reproductive rights, autonomy, and care—opening space for public dialogue and critical reflection.

As part of RE-WIRING’s wider programme of five exhibitions across Europe and South Africa, “Good Mom/Bad Mom” offers a powerful example of how art and material culture can interrogate dominant gender representations and propose new ways of thinking about equality.

The nomination for the Museumtijdschrift Tentoonstellingsprijs provides an opportunity not only to recognize the importance of this exhibition but also to encourage broader engagement with its themes.
