“Women on the Move”: Art that gives voice to women’s journeys and memories of migration

Posted by

On November Friday 14, 2025, the KU Leuven will inaugurate the public art mural Women on the Move together with an accompanying catalogue on its Antwerp campus. The mural -created within the RE-WIRING’s global framework- will remain on permanent view on campus at the heart of the city of Antwerp.

Developed in collaboration with Portuguese mural artist Mariana Duarte Santos through participatory workshops open to the wider public and the campus community, the Women on the Move mural is the outcome of an exploration of women’s migratory experiences through an intersectional gender lens and arts-based methods.

The event (14:00-18:00) will open with remarks by Yves Stevens (Academic Director, Antwerp Campuses) and Priscilla Heynderickx (on behalf of the Campus Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Antwerp). This will be followed by short presentations from Linda Senden (Utrecht University, RE-WIRING) and Inge Lanslots (KU Leuven Antwerp), as well as testimonials from students who participated in the workshops. Mariana Duarte Santos will then introduce and discuss her work, followed by the presentation of the accompanying catalogue.

The event will conclude with a reception (16:00 – 18:00).

Please register before 7 November 2025.

Women on the Move is one of five exhibitions curated under the RE-WIRING project, which uses art and material culture as a means of investigating structural gender inequalities across contexts.
